EQUIS (2018)

Equis was my Solo Undergraduate Exhibition at the Anna Leonowens Gallery in Halifax, Nova Scotia. This interdisciplinary show consisted of textiles, video and performance work. In it, I deconstructed flags as a way of breaking rules, and boundaries, in the hopes of challenging the idea of national borders. The title of the show was a reference to the letter “X” or “equis”, which is formed by a convergence of lines, similar to weaving. This convergence made me reflect on the the complexity and layers of being both Venezuelan by birth, and Canadian via migration, and reflecting on the themes of layering, duality, spanglish, and hybridity of identities. The letter “X” also references the unknown, the “other”, and represents the Roman numeral ten, representing my tenth year living in Canada.
